Modern hillside home with dark cladding and tall windows, Naramata BC

The Passive House Institute tests and certifies building components, including windows and doors, against published performance criteria, and lists the certified products in its component database. It is an independent way to compare products that is not based on a manufacturer's own claims. The list below is drawn from that database as of .

This is not a recommendation, and it is not exhaustive. It shows the companies the database lists with a headquarters in Canada or the United States, and only those with certified windows or doors. A company's manufacturing location can differ from its headquarters. Certifications change, so confirm a product's current status with the company and in the database before you specify it.

How to read the list

  • Climate zone. Certification is specific to a climate zone. Check that a product is certified for the zone your site falls in.
  • Efficiency class. Each certified product is rated in a class, from phA+ at the top through phA, phB and phC. The class, the glazing and the installation details are in each product's database entry.
  • Frame material. Certified windows come in fibreglass, vinyl, wood, aluminum and combinations. Each has its own durability, appearance and cost.

For what makes a window high performance, see High-Performance Triple-Glazed Windows.
